On the Way to Attending Study Sessions
what does the shari'ah say about presenting oblation (religious offering - Nadhr-o-Niyaz)?
(to give someone a gift in respect of gaining their pleasure. This is generally offered when they are facing problems or difficulties)
is it allowed for one to present Nadhr to some good or pious person in the hope of them solving their problems?
Answer :
According to the Qur'an and Sunnah it is very clear that it is an unIslamic and unlawful practice to present Nadhr-o-Niyaz for anyone other than Allah. Allah says in surah Al-Baqarah(2:173)
"He has only forbidden you dead meat and blood and the flesh of swine. And that on which any other name has been invoked besides that of Allah"
unfortunately, some people who are obtinate and rebellious, don't even bother with that the Qur'an has ordered. in the Indian-Pakistan subcontinent especially, these actions are a more common belief. such people claim to be Hanafi. But, Imam Abu Hanifah himself and other leading scholars of this school of thought have strongly condemned such practices.
let us look at some references from Hanafi books:-
1) In a famous book called 'Fatawa Alamgiri', it says 'the people who visit graves to ask for help and say that if you solve my problem I will present you such and such gift for your shrine; this type of 'Nadhr' is totally wrong.'
2) People should know that 'those who present their Nadhr and visit graves to light candles on them, these are all unlawful and Haram activities.' (Durr-Mukhtar)
3) According to Fatawa Shaami it is unlawful because of the following :
i) those who visit graves and present Nadhr, are creation as are those in the grave, and presenting Nadhr is not allowed, except for Allah.
ii) they present this Nadhr to those who have passed away, and those who die have no power over anything in this world.
iii) A person who presents Nadhr believes that someone other than Allah also has power and right, which is no doubt Kufr.
4) Sheikh Qasim has mentioned in his book 'Sharh-Durar' that 'People who have lost someone or something , or if they are facing a problem, usually visit graves or well known people saying that if they return our loss or solve our problem, we shall present them with a Nadhr such as gold, silver, food or lighting the grave with candles, etc. ' These activities are totally unIslamic activities. (Bahrur Ra'iq, vol 2, p 298)
The above quotations are taken from Hanafi books, for the sake of those doing such activities and claiming to be Hanafi's, and also believing these books. They have such a strong belief in these books that they proposed to the government of Pakistan to accept the approved book 'Fatawa Alamgiri', to be the law of Pakistan.
People who indulge in such activities are believers of the following:
i) they seek the pleasure of the dead by giving them Nadhr.
ii) they wish to resolve their problems with the Nadhr and have no other intention. This practice is itself Haram.
if they intend to seek Allah's pleasure, this is lawful and allowed, but there is no need to present oblation or to visit graves seeking for help as this is not approved by the Qur'an and sunnah.
